Description

Torucon has been fortunate enough to have the honor of announcing a preview of the critically acclaimed anime film Totto-chan: The little girl at the window.

About the movie:

When the lively and curious Totto-chan is expelled from her public school, her mother realizes that her daughter needs a different kind of school - a place where freedom, creativity and curiosity can flourish. She takes Totto-chan to Tomoe Gakuen, an unusual school led by the warm and visionary principal, Mr. Kobayashi.

Mr. Kobayashi inspires his students with his deep understanding of children and his belief that each child is unique and valuable. Under his leadership, Tomoe Gakuen becomes a sanctuary – a sheltered paradise in the midst of a world on the brink of war.

As the shadow of World War II looms over Japan, the children of Tomoe still live in a reality marked by hope, imagination, and human kindness.

Totto-chan is based on an autobiographical book written by Japan's Goodwill Ambassador to the UN, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, with the same name as the film (Madogiwa no Totto-chan).

After hearing about how children refused to go to school, Tetsuko decided to write about her own experience attending Tomoe Gakuen during the war. The book quickly became a bestseller in Japan, and also became a required reading for all Japanese third graders.

The film will be shown at Nova Cinema Center on Saturday as one of three possible films Torucon guests can see at a discounted price.
